Every two years, the Heineken Young Scientists Awards honour four young researchers whose pioneering work and research excellence sets an example for other young scientists and scholars. In 2024, the prizes will be awarded for the eighth time. Nominations for this edition are now closed.

About the prizes
Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken established the Heineken Young Scientists Awards in 2010. The aim of the prizes is to honour the next generation of talented researchers and give them extra encouragement for the essential work they do for their field and society. As part of this, all laureates receive a freely disposable cash prize of 15,000 euros and a trophy, funded by the Alfred Heineken Fondsen Foundation. The Heineken Young Scientists Awards are awarded in four domains: Humanities, Social Sciences, Medical/Biomedical Sciences, and Natural Sciences.

Who can be nominated
Candidates eligible for nomination for the awards are those who:

  • obtained a PhD between three and eight years ago, counting from the date of obtaining the PhD. This period is subject to the Foundation Extension Arrangement;
  • after obtaining a PhD have performed outstanding scientific work within one of the above domains;
